Maryland Records $168.5 Million in August Casino Revenue

Maryland’s six casinos combined to generated about $168.5 million in revenue in August, an increase of about $18.9 million, or 12.6%, from August 2020 when revenues were $149.5 million. However, in August last year, Maryland’s casinos were limited to 50% capacity because of restrictions related to an attempt at slowing the spread of COVID-19.

The August figure was down by about $11.6 million compared to July, when Maryland set a record for gaming revenue at the commercial casinos with a combined $180.1 million. All six casinos declined slightly from their July figures.

The casinos’ gaming contribution to the state in August was nearly $71.3 million, a jump of 7.2% (about $10.5 million) from August 2020.

The key contribution is to the Education Trust Fund, which received about $51.8 million for the month, an increase of 17% (about $7.5 million) compared to August 2020. In Maryland, casino gaming revenues also support the communities and jurisdictions where the casinos are located, Maryland’s horse racing industry, and small, minority- and women-owned businesses.

Maryland’s six commercial casinos offer both slot machines and table games: MGM National Harbor in Prince George’s County; Live! Casino & Hotel in Anne Arundel County; Horseshoe Casino Baltimore in Baltimore City; Ocean Downs Casino in Worcester County; Hollywood Casino Perryville in Cecil County; and Rocky Gap Casino Resort in Allegany County.

Breakdown of August Revenue in Maryland

Leading the way among the six casinos for August was MGM National Harbor with total revenue (slots and table games) of $67.4 million in August 2021 an increase of 12.9% from the same month the previous year. Following right behind was Live! Casino & Hotel with $59.5 million in revenue for the month, an increase of 13.4% from August 2020, according to figures from Maryland Lottery and Gaming.

The Horseshoe Casino reported revenue of $18 million, a jump of 7.2% from August 2020. Perhaps buoyed by summer visitation, Ocean Downs Casino had $9.9 million in revenue, an increase of 29.2% from the same month in 2020.

Hollywood Casino had $7.8 million in revenue, up 14.5% from August 2020. And Rocky Gap had revenue of $5.9 million, a decrease of 4.2% from 12 months earlier.
